I think of the Lapwing as a Core Sound prettied up in Glued
Lapstrake. A fellow builder at the Small Reach Regatta was
asked what she thought the best and worse thing about the
Core Sounds were. She loves it's sailing attributes but
felt the worse was they weren't quite as pretty as more
traditional designs.
The Lapstrake was designed for Tom Lathrop a close personal
friend of Graham who felt he had to get a Glued lapstrake
build out of his system. Tom Loved the sailing attributes
of the Core Sounds and the excellent interior layout and
the advantages of the Cat Ketch rig. Graham designed a
round bilge hull that has performance attributes just shy
of the Core Sound 17. Last Year though Tom Thoroughly
embarrassed me by besting me significantly at last years
Small Reach Regatta against my 20 and motivated me to
become a better sailor.
I sorted out a few things that were holding me back, and I
am hoping to get the chance to have a rematch against him
in coming years.
I love the look of the Lapwing and think it is a great
compromise between outright performance and traditional
looks.
